ARTIST STATEMENT
Humans, animals and plants have been migrating as long as they have existed. Whether spurred on by the idea of exploration, the desire for open spaces, the need for food and habitat or survival by the avoidance of predators, other hostile environments or war, migration is a continuous flow of movement on this earth. My research increasingly centers around the consequences of people leaving their homes and trying to create new ones. Our new technological communication possibilities create what I call “a new version of the Third Space” with people meeting virtually over time and space, ultimately connecting although they are physically separate. I work to find a way to express these feelings of longing, belonging, otherness, adventure or connection using a visual language extracted from place and memory.
My images are often created using layers of color or value, starting as abstract forms then becoming something more dimensional or representative. These layers are an ephemeral “visual poetry” – something barely there but essential to the whole. These transparent layers ultimately form an image of desire and response within the works as each color or line interacts with those in the layers before it.
